Massage Therapy

Massage is the manipulation of soft body tissue and muscles for therapeutic purposes and it is an ancient healing art, using various movements to promote the circulation of the blood and lymph, relaxation of muscles, relief from pain, restoration of metabolic balance and many other physical and mental benefits.

“Massage therapy has been noted to relax the nervous system by slowing heart rate and blood pressure. Stress and pain hormones are also decreased by massage, reducing pain and enhancing immune function” – Dr. Tiffany Field, Head of Touch Research Institute, University of Miami Medical School.

The fingers, hands, forearms and elbows are used to manipulate the muscles and soft tissue, with variations in focus and technique creating different types of massage.

Swedish holistic massage has a general focus and uses long strokes, kneading and circular movements, vibration and tapping. Whereas deep tissue massage is more targeted, to reach deep muscles and concentrate on specific areas of concern or pain. Indian head massage applies pressure to certain points on the neck, shoulders and head using a variety of techniques. Techniques can be adapted to address the changes your body goes through when you are pregnant, with a pregnancy massage. Not sure what type of massage you need? Read more here.
